Vinyl siding repair

Two stips of horizontal siding on my house have come loose at one end. Most of the strips are still in place, so they aren't hanging down or anything, but they aren't secure. What does it take to get these re-attached to the house? Do I just nail them in? I know nothing about siding. The warranty on my house expired in April (the one where they repair everything because it's brand new)! Thanks, Megs

Have your strips come loose from the bottom of the strip or the top of it? If it's from the bottom, it's just popped out of the little groove at the top of the strip below it, and all you need do is use a screwdriver or something else flat--a butter knife would do--to work the strip back into the little groove. Once that's done, you've fixed it. If it's from the top, I feel for you. Vinyl siding is nailed up, and if it's come loose from the top, the exposed part of the siding has torn loose from the nailing flange. Fortunately for you, vinyl siding is warranted. Megs, do me a favor, please? Go out on a real hot day and look at your siding, right where two of the strips come together. If the siding is kinda bulging up about every sixteen inches, you've got a case against the siding contractor. When vinyl siding is installed correctly, the nails aren't pounded in tight and the siding can move around--which it needs to do because this product expands and contracts with temperature. If it's bulging, the nails were pounded in tight and the siding can't move. This will ruin it. And it's not like the contractor couldn't have known--every box of vinyl siding the siding company ever made says right on it, "don't nail this tight." -- --jmowreader
