telephone line problem

Hello Group, I'm a new nember of this group but interested in remodleing and rehabing. Have been a maintenance tech in the rental property field for a number of years and have recentely moved to N E Texas with my wife where we purchased a house in the country which is very livable but needs some cosmetic interior work which we are doing. However, I have encountered a problem that has me stumped. We can call out on our telephone (and use the internet) but the phone will not ring when a call is coming in. We had a neighbor help us and when we checked the box on the side of the house, the telephone will ring, so it is an internal problem. I checked the wire that runs through the attic and replaced a section that looked like it could be crimped and maybe have a broken wire, but it didn't solve the problem. Before I have a retired telephone company employee come in for about $75-$100, I wonder if anyone has any suggestions? Sorry for the long post. Thanks for any help in advance sunnytxson

Start at the interface (phone co box) and follow your inside wiring into the house. Does it run into the basement where it is connected to a terminal or does it go directly to a jack? If it runs directly to a jack then isolate that jack by disconnecting any inside wiring running from that jack to others in the house. Test the line, no dialtone then connect the inside wire to the next jack and keep repeating that step. If it stops at a terminal are there other wires connected to the one coming into the house and branching off into several directions toward other room jacks? If you have several branching off then disconnect all the branches from the wire running from the interface. Next, attach each inside wire one at a time and try your phone at the jack. By the process of elimination you should locate the trouble line. I do this everyday. Trust me it will work. Catphish

I had the DSL problem with my telephone line, the DSL adapter had gone bad but it knocked out the use of all my telephones. I couldn't call out and people couldn't call in. I think when people tried to call in they got a busy signal. Of course I'm sure not all of DSL systems are the same. If you have more than one telephone hooked up, unplug them all except one, have someone try to call you. If it doesn't ring, unplug that phone and try another telephone jack. I know if one jack it's right it can effect all your telephones. One other thing I thought of is that make sure who ever use to own the house didn't install a ringer somewhere in the house, like garage or basement. I use to work for someone who had a ringer out in the warehouse. The ringer went bad which caused the telephones in the office to stop ringing also until they unhooked the ringer. I guess you'd call it a ringer, it was round and would ring in the warehouse when a call came in the office, they had this in the event the office was backed up and couldn't answer the telephone. If you can't figure it out see if your local phone company offers an inhouse maintaine program. My local telephone company offers an inhouse maintance program that doesn't cost very much. If you get that added to your account with the telephone company they do not charge extra to come out to your house to repair inside problems. You can always cancel the service after the repair. Hope this helps, Lisa
