Roof Problem? Need Info ASAP Please
Hey guys, we had a hard rain last night. Durring the rain I got water in the windows. It seemed to be coming from the window frams, like the water was on top and the water was just finding a way in. For example, in the kitchen it came only through a screw that mounts the track to the sliding glass door. Do we think I have a roof problem? We've only been in the house a few days. Thanks again and again and again. Steve

If the leaks are coming from things on the side of the house, like window frames and sliding glass doors, it's not a roof problem--although you may want to see if you have gutters, rain diverters and drip edge to help deflect the rain into the gutter system. You have a caulking problem. A couple of tubes of caulking compound would do you good. -- --jmowreader

It would be easy to confirm, though: go up in the attic and look at the roof sheathing for leaks. If the wood is not wet, it isn't a roof leak. Also, what direction did the rain come in? If you're dealing with horizontal rain that hits the side of the house directly like we get around here sometimes, no water-direction stuff on your roof system is going to help. -- --jmowreader
Unfortunately, (or fortunately) I can't get in the attic because we have cathedral ceilings there. I don't see any water damage on the ceilings, walls between window and ceiling or on the window sile, so I don't think this problem has been around for a long time. I bought some cault and will caulk the windows soon. Although, I did look at the roof and the shingles are curled up and flaking a way so it's probably time to replace the roof anyway. I have about a thousand square feet of roof (1400 living space on 2 levels), any idea what I should expect to replace the roof? Thanks, Steve
