How to do tile

I am new to the group, but even newer to home repairs. I really need to replace the floors in my dining room/kitchen. Currently, it's a very inexpensive roll-type flooring, but I want to remove it and replace it with some nice adhesive tiles. This space is not very large, so I think I can probably do this in one day, but I need pointers on how to start and some DO NOT DO THIS tips. Thanks for your help.

The first thing to do is remove the old stuff.Sometimes they put a lot of glue down and sometimes they don't, so you'll find that out when you'r taking it off,,,,and you've got to get it all off. You want to make the flattest, bump free floor you can get. Don't get discouraged because this is the most difficult and time consuming part of the whole job. You didn't say if you have a concrete or wooden base, but right now you just get the old stuff off and the members on the site will go from there.

Thanks so much for your advise. I think I will do a "sample" removal from a corner area just to see what's under there. I was pretty sure I wasn't to just tile over the tile, especially if I want a nice finish, so I'll cut through a section that I can cover with an area rug just to see what I'm up against until I can take on the whole project.
