Farmers Porch
I'm looking for step by step instruction on how to add a farmers porch to my cape. I have most of the information I need but would feel better having back up from a professional. This is my first time tackling anything like this. Does anyone know where I could get this info.? Or if you've done this job before do you have any helpful tips?
Dear Michele Maurier, new framing person you are becoming: :- I've some preliminiary questions in trying to address your concerns. 1. Is you porch roof going to be a "shed" type roof a. Meaning the roof has only one side to it. Attaching to the existing roof and sloping away from the existing roof. OR 2. Is your new porch roof going to be a gable type roof a. Meaning the when your stand in the yard and look directly at the front door you see a roof sloping both to the left and right. In either case you wil need to strip shingle and attach your initial roof framing to the existing decking of the original roof. 3. If the porch roof is going to attach to the side of a house such as the picture below then you've a nother whole set of solutions to deal with. If you are going to have any atic space in the porch roof you will be wise to cut a passage way from the existing to the new. If space makes this possible. If it is to be a simple open porch roof with valted ceiling then the above suggestion is a moot point. Go again to Google and type in - proch framing attached to original house roof framing - then begin typing in these and other words as single items you will be amazed at the myriad of responses. The link below is seemingly a pictorial view of your question. ?? www.hammerzone.com/archives/decks/oldporch/framing/joists.htm Wishing you well in your "high-up" experiences. If you need more help please feel free to ask more questions! :- The only dumb question is the one that wasn't asked.!! :- Believe me I know, for there have been a lot of dumb question I did not ask in the past 35 + years. :- don't allow breaking tools to tick you off! It is a great opportunity to practice our patience and (purchase a new tool) BTW that's the reason I do this kind of work, is so I buy new tools. he he he :- your friend Reeder that sawdusty guy - the carpenter Atlanta, Ga 770-652-2883 \ \ ! / / ( @@ ) _______o000------000o
