Drywall mud vs. spackling compound question

I just love this group. I can ask someone all these things and I don't get treated like I'm a complete fool!~ Ok, that being said, I'm almost done with the wallpaper stripping on the kitchen that wasn't sized or primed before being papered. This last wall was tough and I got into the wallboard in a few places. On the other walls I was able to just use spackling ocmpound to cover up the places where I had pulled the top of the paper off the wallboard (exposing the cardboard that coats the white stuff and is sort of rough). Should I use drywall mud on these larger areas or can I use the spackling compound there? Which would be better? I realize that the drywall mud takes much longer to dry, and if that is a better choice for these patches, that's ok, I've taken this long to do this, I can wait another day or two. What would you folks advise?? Thanks again, Sidney

I'd go with drywall mud. I use mud for all of my repairs. At $10.00 for a 5 gallon bucket it's hard to refuse. The other advantage to drywall mud is youhave a better window for working the mud smooth. I have a tendency to try to "oversmooth" my work and with spackling compound those chances get higher. If you get you drywall coat smooth enough you can work out the few rough spots left with a damp sponge after it dries. It cuts down on dust, and is a lot easier on the arms. I don't know if you can do the same with spackling. Good Luck

Drywall mud. Spackle is harder to sand. BTW, you do know there are drywall muds that dry in five minutes, right? -- --jmowreader

I can sand more smoothly with the mouse than sandpaper or that little spongy wedge sander from Home Depot. I don't know if it would pass a professional's inspection, but it's painted, with eggshell latex, and I'm happy with it. I don't know that I could have done better with the drywall mud, given my skill, or lack thereof! Next project, I am taking all the cabinet doors off, taking the hardware off, painting them with polyurethane stain and replacing the handles. Thanks for the support. Sidney
