door hinges

did you know that the screw holes are different on sone of the same size door hinges? I went to replace some rusty old ones with new ones and the holes did not line up. Not only that but the new holes that were drilled in were so close to the old ones that now the doors are getting loose and floppy. does anyone have some advice?

Cleanly drill out the holes to size of some wooden dowling. Glue pieces of doweling into the holes flush with the surface. When dry, drill holes where you need the. Joel

You need a half-inch oak dowel, a twist drill bit that's just slightly smaller than 1/2", some glue, some sandpaper, and a Japanese handsaw. (The Japanese handsaw has a very thin blade and teeth with almost no set, making it more effective for this job.) Drill the screw holes out, put a little glue on the end of the dowel, stick the dowel in the hole, and saw it off flush. Sand it a bit and do another hole. -- --jmowreader
