You're gonna hate me when I tell you this. How to un-damp a basement so it stays that way: Step 1: Get a shovel and dig a trench all the way around the house down to the bottom of the basement. Make sure you can get into it. Step 2: Measure the number of square feet of wall surface you just exposed. Divide by 100 and write that number down. Call it E, for Enough. Step 3: Go to wherever it is you buy home improvement supplies and get 2E gallons of fibered asphalt roof coating (if E is 10, get 20 gallons), 1/4E rolls of roofing felt, some Damp Rid, and E gallons of UGL Drilok masonry waterproofer. Also get some brushes. Return home. Step 4: Take all the cans of roof coating you bought and separate them into two equal piles. The one to the right is A, the one to the left is B. Start on Saturday morning and brush the asphalt in the A pile onto your basement's outside walls. Put the felt on the wall, then brush the asphalt in the B pile onto the felt. Step 5: Go inside with the UGL Drilok and paint it onto the outside walls. Then set the Damp Rid all over the place to soak up the humidity that's in the air already. Step 6: Next Saturday afternoon, fill the trench back in. Step 7: The weekend after that, get some garage-floor epoxy and paint any concrete floors that are down there. -- --jmowreader
