Clearing brush and weeds

We have a great deal of weeds and brush to clear along our 1/4 mile driveway. Anyone have any recommendations for clearing this periodically? A weed wacker type product would probably not cut through the tough and tall sunflowers that grow in abundance along the road. Ray

This isn't a "high tech" solution, but if you can get hold of a smallish scythe, that might be the answer. (Some scythes are quite large and might be more than you want!) My dad has one that he uses to clear some of his fields, and he loves it. Note: caution and high, tough boots are recommended when using one of these devices. Ann

These are all good ideas! yes I have a bobcat but the land drops pretty fast along the driveway and I'd probably wind up rolling it over trying to run it along the sides of the road. Too bad someone doesn't make a side cutter for a bobcat like they have for tractors. Don't know if I'd have enough strength to scythe a 1/2 mile of brush and weeds! Keeping the goats in the right place might be a bit difficult. :-) Anyone use a walk behind or an ATV side cutter? Any recommendations? Ray Have you got a tractor/bobcat? If not, get one of those, then get a bushhog attachment for it. This isn't a "high tech" solution, but if you can get hold of a smallish scythe, that might be the answer. Have any friends that own goats? They LOVE that kinda stuff . . . "Ray@..." <ray@... weeds and brush to clear along our 1/4 mile driveway. weeds! The key to using a scythe is to keep it sharp as a razor (or so my dad tells me). That's why you wear those high, tough boots .... But a half mile is a far piece! I don't think I'd want to do that either. :) Ann

On Thursday, Aug 12, 2004, at 14:57 US/Eastern, Ray@... I'm going to assume here that Roundup is not for you, and that buying a brush bar that mounts to the side of a tractor is similarly out of the question. Tool rental places have a machine called a Billy Goat, which is like a weed wacker except it's pushed like a lawn mower, it has a five-horse Honda engine on it, and instead of surf-fishing line it uses 1/8" steel cable. -- --jmowreader

As Jim mentioned, a brush bar to attach to a tractor would be a good way to go. Of course, an even better one would be a flamethrower but I doubt that would be allowed up there. ;) Have you considered something of a natural keeper like goats? Once you have it cleared, they'll keep it that way. :)
