Building a house ??
Hello Folks Hubby and I are in the planning stages of building a new house. This house will be built on a side hill, our plans so far are to build it partially underground with a walkout basement. We're planning to use the preformed walls for the basement that you pour concrete in. ( I don't know the name for them). Doe's anyone have a source where we can get good information about building houses? We will probably do most of the work ourselves with the help of a very capable and knowledgeable neighbor. TIA Hazel
Hi Hazel, I can't tell you any specific resources except for this list. It has been a Godsend. I can tell you this, though. Agree on your floor plan ahead of time. Our hosue was of the size that we didn't have to have the floor plan before it was up. We vaccilated so much that we were ready to kill each other! Also both of you sit down and let each other know your expectations, likes and dislikes. It's surprising what you find out about each other during the process. But most of all, keep your sense of humor! Laurean in Iowa
Thanks All for the advice on house building. I have been busy checking out house plans on line and copying a few I like. There will more than likely be a lot of modifications done as we go along, both before and after we start. Next week I'm heading for the Library to check out some books on house building. I need all the information I can get before we get serious about building. I want to be able to have the facts and have something to back me up before we get into to many heated arguments about some facet of construction. I know from when we built our deck plans changed as we went along. Building a house is a lot more critical and things can't be changed as easily as they can for a small project such as a deck. We will probably have a plumber to help with the water lines and sewer lines. But maybe the books I have decided to check out will have lots of information so we wont need as much professional help as I anticipate. Plus our neighbor has helped build several house with Habitat for Humanity and he also built his own house not long ago so we are banking on his expertise. There are a lot of decisions to be made before we even begin. One thing we have agreed on is where to build. That's a start. Thanks again, Hazel
