Another Water heater question
This past summer I had a detached garage built. I moved my washer and dryer out there along with the newly purchased and installed gas water heater. Now the problem, we had a very cold weekend with snow and ice and the alarm on the water heater is now going off. I checked for leaks and found none. The water is still hot coming out of the water heater. The pilot light is still on. I do not smell any gas. But the alarm is still on now. It is still below freezing here. Is this due to condensation? I just silenced the alarm. Should I worry? I'd rather not have to involve a plumber. Not even sure what the alarm detects. It is not described in the manual for the water heater and I do not have any paperwork for the alarm. If anyone has any advice I would really appreciate it. Ande
Do you have a heated garage?? If not ,and the temperature is at freezing then that could be it with the condensatuion and all. most if not all this alarm stuff is micro-circuitry today and it could be the problem. also, what about the water pipes freezing and the washer freezing?(theres always water inside a washer and it could damage internal parts.
No, it is not a high end water heater. It is a separate alarm that is supposed to dial a phone number. Of course, it was an extra charge by the phone company to have that installed so I passed on that. No, the detached garage is not insulated. Since it is detached I did not have it insulated nor did I have dry wall put up. So, yes, it does get pretty cold in there. The pipes are all insulated--as per code. The temperature has gotten warmer and the alarm finally stopped blaring--thank goodness it has a silencer on it! I think it must have been condensation? So, I am still wondering what does this alarm warn of? Leaks? Frozen Pipes? Cold temp? Ande Date: Wed, 28 Jan 2004 03:20:17 -0000 From: "michael" <busone1@... Subject: Re: Another Water heater question This must be some sort of a really high end water heater if it has alarms built in. Must be a freeze alarm, when the temp falls below 32 or something close it sounds to alert you that your pipes could freeze. I have seen these alarms sold as a seperate unit that will dial a phone number if the temp falls but not built into a water heater. You can try using a space heater in the garage to warm the air above 32 degrees. If the pipes are insulated or heated you will probably be ok.
